Dark Shadows is a 2012 American horror comedy film based on the 1966–71 gothic horror soap opera of the same name. The film is directed by Tim Burton and stars Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, a 200-year-old vampire who was imprisoned in a coffin but is unearthed and makes his way back to his mansion now inhabited by his dysfunctional descendants. He soon runs into trouble revitalising the family's canned fish business, as his jealous ex-flame and imprisoner Angelique Bouchard, played by Eva Green, runs the rival company. Michelle Pfeiffer also stars as his cousin Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, the reclusive matriarch of the Collins family. It had a limited release on May 10, 2012,[2] opening fully the following day in the United States.

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet-or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better...

Dark Shadows is directed by Tim Burton based on a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith. In July 2007, Warner Bros. acquired film rights for the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows from the estate of its creator Dan Curtis. Johnny Depp had a childhood obsession with Dark Shadows, calling it a "dream" to portray Barnabas Collins, and ended up persuading Burton to direct.[17] The project's development was delayed by the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike. After the strike was resolved, Tim Burton was attached to direct the film.[18] By 2009, screenwriter John August was writing a screenplay for Dark Shadows.[19] In 2010, author and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith replaced August in writing the screenplay.[20] August, did, however, receive story credit with Smith for his contribution to the film. Filming began in May 2011. It was filmed entirely in England, at both Pinewood Studios and on location.[7] Depp attempted to emulate the "rigidity" and "elegance" of Jonathan Frid's original Barnabas Collins, but also drew inspiration from Max Schreck's performance in Nosferatu.[21]
Additional crew members and Burton regulars are production designer Rick Heinrichs, costume designer Colleen Atwood, editor Chris Lebenzon and composer Danny Elfman.[7] French cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel — known for his work in Amélie, A Very Long Engagement and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince — worked on the project.
Marketing
The trailer for the film premiered exclusively on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on March 15, 2012. That same day, the trailer made its online debut on Apple.com. According to MTV, Tim Burton has opted "for gonzo comedy that should please many, but may rile fans of the original soap opera."[22]
Character posters were also made, featuring a face portrait of each of the nine main characters (Barnabas, Victoria, Elizabeth, Angelique, Dr. Hoffman, Roger, Willie, Carolyn, and David), with a heading naming the actor and the character they portray (e.g. "Eva Green as Angelique Bouchard"), and the alternate tagline "Strange is Relative" beneath the picture as well as the usual credits. The posters featured the saturated colors also featured in the main poster with a lighter halo around each character's head which grows darker towards the frames of the image. Cardboard dioramas with a red velvet throne (per the poster featuring Depp as Barnabas seated in a similar chair) were distributed to cinemas, with a cardboard plaque beneath the seat encouraging patrons to take pictures of themselves in the seat and post them to either the official Facebook page or with the hashtag #DarkShadows on Twitter.
Leading up to the film's release date, numerous character-driven trailers were also made, featuring clips from the film showcasing a particular character and interviews with their respective actor. Several of these were posted on co-financer and Australian distributor Village Roadshow Pictures' official Facebook page, who also posted numerous cover photos counting down the days until the film's release.
